Fake Follower Statistics and Audience Quality Benchmarks
What we found after auditing 1031 curated public Instagram accounts with the same pipeline that powers every EngageCheck report. No industry guesses, every figure below comes from our own dataset.
Curated public accounts across 18 niches, audited with the full EngageCheck pipeline.
On our 0 to 100 scale. Sample scores ranged from 29 to 88.
Average estimated share of followers per account showing bot or inactive patterns.
Share of analyzed accounts landing in the mixed or high-risk quality bands.
How the sample splits by quality band
Each audited account gets one Audience Quality Score from 0 to 100. Here is where all 1031 accounts landed.
Strong real engagement for the account size, clean comment sections, organic growth.
Healthy overall with minor soft spots, usually safe to work with.
Real audience mixed with weak engagement or bot-pattern signals. Worth a closer look.
Multiple red flags. We would not greenlight a paid deal without manual review.
Audience quality by niche
Average Audience Quality Score per niche in the sample, with each niche's lowest and highest scoring account.
Averages describe this curated sample, not every account in a niche. Strong and weak accounts exist everywhere, so check the specific account before you spend.
Benchmarks by follower count
The same audits grouped into the follower-size tiers every EngageCheck report benchmarks against.
| Tier | Accounts | Avg AQS | Avg bot or inactive | Avg real engagement |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Nanounder 10K followers | 16 | 59.5 | 29.2% | 144.83% |
| Micro10K to 100K | 26 | 59.9 | 29% | 36.07% |
| Mid100K to 500K | 93 | 61.8 | 27.9% | 3.94% |
| Macro500K to 1M | 102 | 62.3 | 27.7% | 2.73% |
| Mega1M+ followers | 794 | 59.1 | 29.5% | 2.51% |
Real engagement is the engagement rate recalculated against estimated real followers only. On small accounts it can exceed 100% when a viral post reaches far beyond a tiny follower base, and small tiers are noisier than large ones. Tiers with fewer than 5 accounts in the sample are hidden until the sample grows.
The most common failing signals
Each audit grades five signals. These signals were most often graded red across the 1031 analyzed accounts.
Across the sample, an average of 39.3% of sampled comments per account were flagged as bot-pattern comments by the AI grading pass.
How this benchmark is built
Curated public sample
We hand-picked 1090 well-known public Instagram accounts across 10 niches. 1031 audits completed; 56 accounts could not be audited (private, renamed, or no public posts) and 3 were duplicates or reused recent audits.
The real product pipeline
Every account went through the exact audit pipeline customers use: public profile data, engagement statistics, growth pattern checks, and AI comment grading. No login, no private data.
One comparable score
Five weighted signals roll up into one Audience Quality Score from 0 to 100, benchmarked against accounts of similar size so a 10k and a 10M account are judged fairly.
Living dataset
Figures on this page are aggregates computed from the dataset as of July 3, 2026 and refresh as the sample grows. We publish counts, never per-account callouts.
This is a curated sample of public accounts, not a census of Instagram. Sample composition affects averages, and estimates of bot or inactive followers are model-based probabilities, not verified counts. Use these figures as directional benchmarks and audit the specific account before making decisions. When quoting, please cite EngageCheck and the as-of date.
Common questions
How many Instagram followers are fake on average?
There is no platform-wide census, so we measured our own sample. Across 1031 curated public accounts audited by EngageCheck as of July 3, 2026, an average of 29.2% of followers per account showed bot or inactive patterns. Individual accounts ranged widely, which is why we score each account instead of applying one number.
What is a good Audience Quality Score?
EngageCheck scores accounts 0 to 100. In this sample the average is 59.7. We treat 75 and above as excellent, 60 to 74 as solid, 45 to 59 as mixed, and below 45 as high risk. 50% of the accounts we analyzed landed below 60.
Where do these statistics come from?
From EngageCheck's own audit pipeline. We ran full audits on a curated sample of 1090 well-known public Instagram accounts across 18 niches, using the same public-data pipeline, AI comment grading, and statistical checks that power every EngageCheck report. 1031 audits completed successfully; 59 accounts could not be audited or were duplicates, mostly private, renamed, or empty profiles.
Is this a platform-wide statistic for all of Instagram?
No. This is a curated sample of public accounts that we selected across popular niches, not a random or exhaustive census of Instagram. It is a transparent benchmark you can compare a specific account against, and we update it as the sample grows.
Which niche has the healthiest audiences?
In the current sample, Gaming averages the highest Audience Quality Score at 68.3, while parenting averages the lowest at 56.3. Every niche contains both strong and weak accounts, so we always recommend checking the specific account.
How does audience quality vary by follower count?
In this sample, Nano accounts (under 10K followers) average an AQS of 59.5, Micro accounts (10K to 100K) average an AQS of 59.9, Mid accounts (100K to 500K) average an AQS of 61.8, Macro accounts (500K to 1M) average an AQS of 62.3, Mega accounts (1M+ followers) average an AQS of 59.1. Larger accounts tend to carry more bot and inactive followers in absolute terms, which is why every EngageCheck report benchmarks an account against its own size tier.
